It was an incredible honour to join our owners, partners and friends from Úújǫ Developments LP, the economic development arm of Doig River First Nation, for their June 20 grand opening at Urban Reserve Gat Tah Kwą̂ - 'Houses Among the Spruce.'
Since 2009, DRFN had been actively working towards the creation of an Urban Reserve within the city of Fort St. John, BC. An Urban Reserve is defined as land within or adjacent to an urban municipality that has been set apart by the federal Crown for the use and benefit of a First Nation.
The new addition-to-reserve (ATR) lands are spread across three parcels covering approximately 20 acres in the municipality, and were officially added to Doig’s land base following approval by the federal government in April 2022. The new lands are intended to meaningfully integrate Doig River into the Fort St. John economy.
People & Progress
"Today is for our future generations, and it's a dream come true for all of us," said Chief Trevor Makadahay. "We never left Gat Tah Kwą̂, we are just coming home."
Representatives from Kathairos enthusiastically took part in the opening celebrations while showcasing the company's methane elimination system – oil and gas well site technology that is actively deployed on DFRN territory and invested in by the Nation.
“Doig River First Nation's dedication to their community and environmental stewardship is commendable,” said Dick Brown, President and Chief Executive Officer at Kathairos. “We are inspired by their efforts and thrilled to support this project.”
Doig River First Nation, known traditionally as Tsááʔ ché ne dane, are descendants of the Dane-zaa peoples, who have lived in harmony with the Peace River region for millennia.
With a rich history and a profound connection to the land, DRFN is dedicated to protecting the environment and fostering sustainable practices. Kathairos is honoured to work alongside the community in reducing emissions and furthering sustainability.
Prosperity & Partnership
"Our shared vision with Kathairos is one of progress, respect for our land, and the prosperity of our people," said Wayne Rothlisberger, VP of Business Development for Úújǫ.
Kathairos, Úújǫ and DRFN announced their partnership in February 2024, in a collaboration to pioneer sustainable environmental practices while fostering economic growth and cultural preservation.
As Úújǫ continues to realize its vision of bringing health, wealth and opportunity to the people of Doig River, Kathairos is inspired and excited to play a role – today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
