Setting the Pace for a Sustainable Future in the Energy Sector.
In the heart of the energy industry, where innovation meets necessity, Chevron is charting a bold path towards environmental stewardship and sustainable energy production. At the forefront of this transformative journey are advanced technologies and visionary leaders dedicated to reducing methane emissions—a critical step in achieving a lower carbon future.
As the largest oil and gas producer in Colorado, particularly in the Denver-Julesburg (DJ) Basin, Chevron has established itself as a commanding presence. Within the DJ, the company's extensive operations cover a vast geographic area and support the production of over 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. With more than a thousand facilities and a few thousand wells, Chevron definitively makes its mark as a leading force in the region.
Over the past decade, Chevron has consistently prioritized the integration of new technologies into its operations. Chevron places a high priority on the adoption of cutting-edge technology that supports reaching new sustainability standards while enhancing operational efficiencies.
Leading the Charge in Environmental Stewardship: Chevron’s Methane Management
Methane management is central to Chevron's environmental strategy. The company's overarching goal is to ensure that methane stays in the pipe.
“When we think about our lower carbon journey, methane plays a critical role, and making sure that methane stays in the pipe is our goal. That goal is shared across our enterprise; and, making it part of our culture is a key to our success.” Vanessa Ryan, General Manager of Climate and Engagement at Chevron.
This commitment is ingrained in the company's culture, with global employee training focused on maintaining tight control over methane emissions and employing advanced detection technologies to identify and address any potential leaks.
Cultivating a Culture of Sustainability
At the cultural core of Chevron's environmental initiatives stands Vanessa Ryan, the General Manager of Climate and Engagement. Ryan is tasked with the crucial role of articulating and promoting Chevron’s lower carbon initiatives globally, with a keen focus on methane mitigation. She drives the narrative that keeping methane in the pipe is a cornerstone of Chevron’s operational philosophy.
Ryan champions three strategic pillars: innovative design, responsible operations, and cutting-edge detection technologies. These elements are ingrained in Chevron’s operations, where employees are encouraged to engage creatively and proactively in their roles to drive the company's sustainability objectives forward. The deployment of Kathairos technology, which replaces natural gas with nitrogen in pneumatic controllers, emerged as a shining example of this ethos in action. Not only does this technology streamline operations by eliminating the need for external power sources, but it also showcases the type of creative solutions that can arise from a deeply embedded culture of innovation and sustainability.
Chevron: Leading the charge
Pioneering Change with Kathairos’ Technology
In an innovative collaboration that highlights the synergy between expertise and technological advancement, we proudly served Chevron as a pivotal solution in their journey to mitigate methane emissions in their DJ operations. We introduced our cryogenic liquid nitrogen tanks, designed specifically to address the prevalent challenge of methane venting from pneumatic devices in the oil and gas industry.
With the simplicity, reliability, and rapid deployment capabilities of our solution, within a few months, we managed to deliver and install our technology at over 250 Chevron sites, significantly converting over 5,500 pneumatic devices.
“It's very simple. You're taking methane out of the pneumatics. You're replacing it with nitrogen at pressure and venting that instead. So, you get essentially 100 percent reduction from methane emissions from those pneumatics. And then the turnkey nature of the project made it really attractive to deploy.” Curtis Rueter, Senior Advisor of Technology and Innovation at Chevron.
The cooperation between Kathairos and Chevron was evident throughout the project, with both teams working closely to ensure that logistics, delivery, and installation processes were carried out on time and on schedule.
A Unified Vision for a Sustainable Tomorrow
Chevron's journey toward a lower carbon future is a narrative of ambitious goals, strategic partnerships, and innovative leadership. The integration of Kathairos’ technology into Chevron's operations is a testament to the company’s commitment to not only adhering to environmental standards but setting new benchmarks for the industry. Through the collective efforts Chevron’s Internal Champions like Jonathon Pomerantz, Curtis Rueter, and Vanessa Ryan, Chevron continues to lead the way, proving that with the right technology and a committed team, the oil and gas industry can indeed pivot towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
