Kathairos has emerged as the leading North American solution for methane elimination from pneumatics, with more than 1,000 systems in operation across North America and over 40 major oil and gas producer partners.

About Kathairos

In this post

We are pleased to announce that we have received support from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) as part of their Emerging Innovators Challenge! Funding from the ERA will directly support Kathairos’ development of innovative new technology to eliminate methane venting at oil storage tanks.

ERA Support

Methane venting from storage tanks contributes significantly to total methane emissions from oil and gas facilities, presenting a significant emissions challenge for producers. Founded in 2009, ERA was created to assist in the achievement of Alberta’s environmental goals, like emissions reduction, while encouraging economic growth. Support from the ERA Emerging Innovators Challenge will aid Kathairos’ development of new technology specifically designed to mitigate methane emissions from oil storage tanks.

Simplifying Regulatory Compliance

As recently mandated by both the American and Canadian federal governments, stringent methane elimination regulations will be implemented by 2028 and 2030 respectively. To comply with these regulations, the development of effective methane reduction solutions is paramount and time-sensitive for oil and gas producers across North America. Kathairos’ existing technology eliminates methane from pneumatic devices, while our ERA-supported project is designed to address methane venting from storage tanks, further reducing producers’ total methane emissions to align with government-mandated regulations. Current tank venting reduction techniques are typically complex, expensive, and weather-sensitive; our proposed technology offers a simple and cost-effective solution to emissions from tank venting for our industry partners.

How it works

The proposed technology utilizes our current cryogenic liquid nitrogen tanks in conjunction with a twin turbine system to recover vapors prior to venting. Because the system is powered by nitrogen, the need for external power is negated, offering a unique solution particularly well-suited to remote sites that may be off-grid. The result is a reliable and affordable answer for oil and gas producers attempting to reduce emissions from their storage tanks. Closely linked to Kathairos’ available technology, the new system will integrate smoothly with our existing operations.

Timeline

Although the proposed technology is still in the early stages of development, we are optimistic about its potential. Fortunately, support from ERA enables us to fast-track the development and testing of Kathairos’ latest project for methane mitigation; we anticipate the system to be available to our partners in 2025.
